hufflepuff draco outline

hello!

i'm not here anymore and i'm certainly never writing hp fic again, but if anyone wanted some kind of... closure? idk? on the hufflepuff draco series... here's the outline ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ literally just copied and pasted the entire doc here. for reference "quatch" was an in-joke name for quidditch with me & ao3 user aroceu.

Series title: You Might Belong in Hufflepuff

Part 1: Learning to Fly

• draco is sorted into hufflepuff, tries desperately to leave

• flying lesson: draco tries to fly away but zach chases him and they get in lots of trouble

• CONSEQUENCE: harry does not get onto the gryffindor quidditch team

• over halloween, there’s a troll in the bathrooms and draco tries to use this as his opportunity to escape. somehow he is stopped

• gets the letter from his father that due to his disobedience he is to stay at hogwarts over the holidays until he can learn to behave himself in a way more fitting of a malfoy. it is the first communication from his family all year.

• draco goes home for the holidays but his parents never come to pick him up, so he ends up staying with susan and her aunt.

• he’s really grumpy to be sent back but also around now he should start becoming friendly with susan, which changes things a little, makes him feel more welcome

• while harry is out causing trouble with quirrel etc, draco tries to escape from hogwarts one last time

• susan sees him and zach on this occasion and he’s like “oh are you going to try to stop me” and she’s like “nah this looks fun can i help too?”

• at some point sprout gives him a talk that his tenacity is very hufflepuff, and look how hard he’s been working etc

• (draco: will you expel me??? please?????? dumbledore: oh i think not)

• he resigns himself to his fate

• some kind of reconciliation with his parents?

Part 2: Enemies of the Heir

• train station scene; draco and parents, is he aware it’s a show of strength for them? justin says hi and draco ignores him

• draco, zach, and megan try out for quatch

• draco and megan don’t make it; zach does. this drives a wedge between draco and zach and they stop talking. susan takes zach’s side bc she thinks draco’s being unreasonable, so draco ends up spending a lot more time around the other hufflepuffs (incl justin)

• draco also pretends to be the heir of slytherin, posturing, because he thinks it’ll restore his reputation. nobody really takes him seriously tho, esp not his housemates

• duelling club happens in here. keep draco and harry antagonism?

• then justin gets petrified and that kinda fucks draco up because he was out there laughing about the monster only going for muggleborns, but he also was beginning to like justin. at least one scene of him talking to petrified justin at his bedside

• while justin is petrified, draco builds bridges with zach and even cheers for him at quidditch [also a xmas conversation where zach says he stays over the holidays because he hates his family? bonding…]

• justin wakes up and draco apologises to him too

• fuck the Cause!

Part 3: Be Not Afraid

• Something to wrap up the Draco/Zach friendship falling apart, and begin to rebuild it. Just doesn’t fit in part 2 but absolutely necessary for part 3 to work

• everyone is talking about fears because of the boggart [puffs only in that class]

• helping Justin get over his fear of heights?

• care of magical creatures (draco has a fear of animals?)

• classes:

  • Draco: divination, runes

  • Zach: arithmancy, muggle studies

  • Justin: divination, runes

  • Ernie: COMC, muggle studies, runes

  • Wayne: COMC, muggle studies

  • Susan: COMC, runes

  • Megan: COMC, muggle studies, runes

  • Hannah: COMC, divination

Part 4: Écossaise

• YULE BALL BABEY! no other details from book 4 needed, and 3 has been glossed over. lots of the friendships and how they’ve settled will become clear

• susan says she has a date but is cagey about who it is; draco eventually finds out that this is because her date is tracey, a slytherin, and she knows draco is sensitive about slytherins.

• basically draco and zach very nearly pull a harry and ron on the yule ball; until the last minute they have no dates, and then draco, in a bit of desperate foreshadowing, says something like "at this stage i'll even go with bloody justin!" and justin's like, "oh, sorry, i'm going with anthony"

• and draco has a lightbulb moment that he doesn't need to ask a girl (this is b4 he finds out susan is going with tracey) so he's like, zach, you should absolutely definitely go to the yule ball with me but Just As Friends Obviously

• and the two of them go together and double up a lot with anthony and justin who are probably actually dating but they have a miserable time and like 5-6 years later when i have established draco/justin and zach/anthony, zach will be like, "hey draco remember how we spent the whole yule ball being unreasonably pissy about anthony and justin" and draco be will like "yes why do you---oh"

Part 5: To the Victor

• small cedric fic, and how the hufflepuffs rally around each other at the end of the year

• mention potter stinks in here

• also, zach’s crush on cedric. make cedric’s death painful!!!

Part 6: Draco’s Army

• must open with draco being let into the family fold a little more, maybe even getting on with pansy while the others are at the DA? so the ending hurts even more heheuheuhe

• draco doesn’t join the DA but gets implicated anyway (comes to warn them about inquisitorial squad but it obv looks like he’s on the other side) and disowned

• (narcissa tells him it is for his own safety because of voldemort; lucius is in trouble now and draco is a potential target)

• other stuff is that draco finally joins the quidditch team and fights with zach about it (bc draco is the new seeker and zach obviously misses cedric) (megan and zach are chasers, heidi is the captain)

• draco and zach both spend winter with susan

Part 7: The Summer of Discontent

• draco fears he’s wanted by voldemort, so he spends the summer holidays being passed around between the hufflepuff boys. (susan wouldn’t let him stay because it wasn’t safe - later amelia is murdered, at some point he goes to amelia’s funeral.)

• he starts out at ernie’s lairdship. it is hell because they clash so badly. also ernie wears a kilt and maybe woad. draco stands in the rain and screams

• he goes to justin’s fuckhuge manor house and is duly overwhelmed. (malfoy grounds are bigger, but justin’s actual house is bigger.) there is UST. at some point draco admits to justin he went and visited him while he was petrified just to talk to him. (four years later lol)

• next to zach’s clusterfuck wizarding bowerbird house, which draco appreciates just because it’s magical, even though zach hates it.

• and finally to wayne’s tiny flat in cardiff.

Part 8: Loser’s Lurgy

• starts at amelia’s funeral?

• who’s trying to kill dumbledore?

• there is, perhaps, resolved sexual tension

• also resolved friendship tension? harry and draco actually get on

• Hermione takes Zach to slug club to piss off ron; Draco sneaks in, genuinely trying to gatecrash. (this is still good)

• the overall theme is draco is learning to deal with being disowned, just when he’d thought he might have his family back; coming to terms with the fact that he can’t have both worlds because his two worlds really are at war

• is draco old enough to learn apparition?

• draco meeting up with narcissa in secret

• QUIDDITCH is a big deal again; zacharias is team captain

Part 9:

• 7th year draco joins DA, narcissa helps him hide justin (draco through gritted teeth: “he is… my friend”)

• zach and anthony get together and draco is mad because he can’t be with justin, probably this does a better job of radicalising him than anything else up to this point

Part 10:

• some kind of (several years?) post-canon thing to tie up loose ends - maybe a hogwarts reunion?
