2015 in writing

total number of completed stories: 25 on ao3 and honestly that's all i'll count because there's a whole heap on dreamwidth and tumblr that i'd have to dig up
total word count: (note that not all of these are from complete fics, some are from published WIPs and others are from flashfic written from prompts, etc. i'm not counting all the WIPs in my drafts folder... that'd get messy fast. )
  • ao3: 151,389
  • dreamwidth: 8,278
  • tumblr: 16,333
  • brief ask.fm phase: 2,816
  • saso and swag (excluding those that made it to ao3): 11,277
  • OVERALL TOTAL: 190,093
fandoms written in: haikyuu!!, harry potter, asoiaf

looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?
more. way more. especially considering that was the last year of my degree i uh. yeah. oops.

what’s your own favorite story of the year?
hmm, funnily enough my personal favourite is a konoaka i wrote for rarepair week, called Mutually Assured Distraction. i wrote pretty much the whole thing in one go, because i was just having so much fun with it. and i think that's why it stands out for me, because i really, truly enjoyed writing it. Curiosity Kills is definitely a runner up, because it's another story i had fun writing.

did you take any writing risks this year?
well, i signed up for saso and swag, which definitely counts. also i think a lot of my work this year was written with the express intention that i was trying something new, especially in terms of structure and form. playing around with the way i presented my ideas was a big part of 2015 for me!

do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year?
finally finish before destruction and accidental renaissance. for fuck's sake. (and once AR is done, pick up a new harry potter project, because i'm restless like that.)

best story of the year?
i think this is How (Not) To Share A Bathroom. mainly because i literally wrote 8k of this fic in one day but it's still really good? and for a long time it was the most popular fic in the hq summer hols collection, right from the start, which really blew me away because it's oisuga, which was comparatively rare at the time, and i wasn't expecting it to reach such a wide audience. to this day i still have people telling me they loved it and i think the power of fanfic to make other people happy is one of the main reasons i write (sorry for being corny) so yeah, hntsab wins Best of 2015 as the surprise success story.

most popular story of the year?
not only is this my most popular of the year, it's the third most kudos'd on my entire ao3, which is, whoa. the fic is texting (with a captial S) and it's the first matsuhana i ever wrote. funnily enough in kudos it's immediately trailed by my second matsuhana, [obnoxious clucking noises]. 2015 really was the year of matsuhana. (thanks, san!)

story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
there were a few i was thinking of to put here, but they've gained a few more kudos while i wasn't looking. i think in the end i have to go for Unlucky Thirteen, which is genfic so obvs there's not a wide reach, but i really love it, so if including it here can make a difference, then i hope it does! actually there's another fic i want to put here but since hqhols reveals aren't up i'll keep my mouth shut. all i'll say is i wrote two things for this hols and my pinch hit has way more kudos than my main present, but it's my main present that needs the love at this stage.

most fun story to write:
aw crap i already covered this by equating favourite with fun. so uh, see above.

story with the single sexiest moment:
technically no-one is allowed to know this exists so uh. nope. all i'll say is it's an anonymous swag fill and there are 55+ pages of prompts so good luck.

most sweet story:
this is soar, my daiyui from rarepair week. i think it's really cute... !

”holy crap, thats wrong, even for you!” story:
again, these are things that, for all intents and purposes, don't exist and weren't written by me. but i've not actually written anything too gross. i read "no less than three eggs" does that count

story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
probably (untitled: strength), because i singlehandedly made myself ship ushishira with this. i mean, i already shipped it, but this made it worse. so much worse.

most unintentionally telling story:
um, oh man, definitely my last story of the year, The Fine Art of Being Invisible. i actually made people cry with this?? so many people are relating to it and there's definitely a lot of me in there too.

hardest story to write:
this is the hqhols fic that i mentioned being underrated above. it was a bit of a style departure for me, but in the end i really loved the process of writing it and pushing myself outside my comfort zone. so please read it when author reveals are up!! i'll put a link here then.

biggest disappointment:
did i mention that i want more people to read my holsfic ok but seriously i'll stop harping on about that and say that, actually, i'm pretty damn impressed with myself this year. i think every time i write, my writing gets a little bit better, and so i'm not disappointed with any of the work i've put out there this year. maybe at the time of publishing; but then the very fact that i've published it is a mark of courage (for me, anyway) and acceptance of what i can and can't do with my writing. so, i won't let myself be disappointed!

biggest surprise:
this actually relates to a fic i posted last year, by any other name. at the time of writing, it has 1,976 kudos. i know it won't hit 2,000 before the year is out but it's steadily been gaining and, given it's the first hq fic i ever wrote, the response has been literally phenomenal. so my biggest surprise has been watching it climb to be the fic with the second-most kudos in the tsukkiyama tag on ao3 (and in the first, it's a side pairing so HAH), watching it break 1,000, and so on. it's kind of ridiculous, actually. i don't quite know what to do about it. i know kudos breeds hits breeds kudos and it's a vicious cycle, but please allow me to take some pleasure in having benefited from this cycle, in just one case. //w\\
