dear yuletide writer...
hi,
renaissance here! my theme for this yuletide is history, with three 1980s-ish canons that are preoccupied with the legacies of the past, and two historical RPF fandoms. please note that all of these are OR requests, and you do not need to feature every character requested.
i'm also entered in the crossover challenge, where i have prompted any sort of crossover/fusion between any of dead poets society/the secret history/withnail & i, and a secret history/19th century british writer RPF crossover or fusion. you can find more detail here.
i hope you find something in my letter that catches your eye. happy creating!

↬ i'm very very late to the game but i watched the film for the first time this year and really loved it
↬ very very very very sad about neil :(
↬ my favourite character was definitely todd. let the boy shout!!!
↬ probably what i love most about this canon is the atmosphere, that creepy new england vibe and the stress and secrecy of a boarding school environment

↬ having said that about the atmosphere, i would love a post-canon fic where everyone is out in the world living their best/worst lives and something brings them back together
↬ i'm really into the idea of post-canon todd/charlie. i would love to read anything exploring that! if you're curious, my personal read on charlie was as a character working through some serious internalised homophobia, and i can see him continuing that trajectory and really learning to embrace it. todd, on the other hand, is probably still bottling it up.
↬ neil lives (and gets to have an acting career) fix-it fic is also appreciated, with optional canon-era and beyond todd/neil
↬ really just anything that makes all that gay subtext into text... i'd be into it
↬ AUs are good too!!

↬ so this is my favourite book ever. raise your hand if you've ever been personally victimised by donna tartt
↬ francis is my best boy. love his eccentricities. love his anxieties. also really big fan of judy poovey and her girl gang
↬ similarly to dead poets society, i'm really into the new england gothic, and the crucible of a college environment where everyone knows everyone else's business and it's all a little vicious
↬ i really like how every character is their own special brand of horrid... i encourage you to lean into that

↬ i'm always into canon divergence, or even canon era gap fillers. i'm happy for a story featuring any of the four characters i requested! (regarding canon divergence, you can do whatever you like with henry and bunny.)
↬ put them at hampden, or put them somewhere else in an AU. go absolutely wild with possibility!
↬ if you want to write something post-canon, all i ask is that you let francis be happy (even if it's within the confines of an unhappy marriage)
↬ anything featuring the female characters and any f/f is very very welcome
↬ i don't mind if you want to go gen or shippy. my ship preference is for richard/francis, but i also like richard/twins, henry/camilla, camilla/judy, and henry/bunny. not a huge fan of henry/richard or henry/julian.

↬ this is the point where i realise that all the modern canons i've requested are really bleak. the bleaker the better!
↬ anyway, this is one of my favourite movies ever. it's got everything: britain in the 80s, awful people doing awful things, homoeroticism, the spectre of change, lots of rain........
↬ i really like paul mcgann's hair in this
↬ i really like marwood in general, this idealist caught up being codependent with a cynic, a character who's really trying to find his way out while still being attached to certain parts of his life.

↬ look, i'm just going to say it: let marwood kiss withnail!!! let withnail kiss marwood!!!!! force them to have EMOTIONS
↬ genfic is fine by me, but i am super duper here for some tropey, shippy nonsense. bonus points if you can somehow fit fake dating in there.
↬ canon continuation, missing scenes, pre-canon, all cool.
↬ AUs where they're in an entirely different setting but still having the same problems? also very cool.
↬ i'm not like super into anything that heavily features monty... that was the focus of the film, so as fic, i'm more interested in the rest of marwood's life, fitting around that.

↬ to be honest, my favourite thing about this sort of fandom is that there's so much room for interpretation. we have characters, and we can make our own stories. so whatever your interpretation of these characters and their relationships, i'll be sure to love it.
↬ i love the court politics, the scandal, the way you can trace the history of british society through the mores of this era. it's really interesting to me, too, as a relatively quiet period of history. we've come out the other end of the turmoil of the tudors, we're yet to hit cromwell and the restoration, but this lull doesn't make it any less messy.
↬ i don't want to be prescriptive about character interpretation, but i would appreciate due care given to the women in their lives... as in, no arbitrarily one-dimensional female villainy for frances howard or anne of denmark, and all that.

↬ in general, i am very open for this fandom. if you have a story you want to tell, i want to read it.
↬ the story of their relationship is pretty well known. i'd like anything that traces that history, or any scenes from within it. i'm also interested in what we don't know, what they might have been like behind closed doors.
↬ it could be really fun to tell the story as though they were modern royalty, with tabloids and all that!

↬ for this fandom, i've requested lord byron and his crew. i'm a big fan of their poetry and writing (though i confess i've yet to read frankenstein). i particularly like byron's poetry... there's something about it that makes me feel a certain way.
↬ the DRAMA of it all! the romance! the gloom! i think the reason these characters are so appealing is because their outlook on life feels very relatable to those of us who were teenagers when emo was big, and because they have relationships that could be lifted out of modern dramas.
↬ of course, there's also a certain fascination to these tragic poets who died so young. what could they have gone on to do? or were they destined to be bright flames that burnt out fast?
↬ i'm also kind of fixated on the grand tour of the Continent as a framing device, a theme, a motif, an obsession.

↬ i'm pretty open for this fandom. any stories with these characters would be incredible. i'm really into anything that draws on the gloom of their creative output, and in true romantic tradition ties their emotional landscapes to the natural landscape that surrounds them. lots of dark and stormy nights, trees and rivers as much characters as the people are.
↬ if you want to do a modern AU, i would not be opposed. like, imagine byron and keats fighting over who's better, the cure or the smiths.
↬ i have absolutely zero shipping preferences here and i don't care how gen or shippy you go for this fandom, so long as byron remains a messy bitch who's sleeping with as many people as humanly possible.
↬ if you want to crossover, as it were, with any other historical figures of the time, please do. i am also a fan of jonathan strange and mr. norrell, if you're inclined to treat that as part of 19th century CE british writer RPF canon.
