for this edition of the sunshine challenge, i'm going to share my favourite fics of all time - the ones that have stayed with me in some way, where i've fallen in love with the writing and the setting and the interpretations of the characters. some of them are popular, some of them are hidden gems. all of them are exceptional. and after that i'm going to rec a few of my own fics, because hey, self-recs are allowed in this challenge, and i love to show off!

A Duet by [archiveofourown.org profile] mustntgetmy - Harry Potter, Sirius/Remus - M - 24k

not to scare you off, but this rec begins with a warning: not for the faint-hearted. it's neither graphic nor deals with particularly heavy scenes, but it is incredibly, deeply sad and affecting. of course, this is why it's earnt its place in my list of all-time faves. i read this whole fic in one sitting and absorbed it into my heart. i love what the author does with the canon divergence premise: sirius is in slytherin, and the way he comes into remus' life is very cleverly done. (i won't spoil it for you.) there's also a lot of really exquisite writing throughout, a strong setting of a kind that's rarely matched in fic. you'll be sad, but you'll be happy about it.

A Little Disguised, or a Little Mistaken by [archiveofourown.org profile] Page161of180 - The Magicians, Quentin/Eliot - M - 18k

you know those fics that just reach inside your mind and pull out everything you love, sticking it all in one story and making you believe that mind reading is real? yeah. this is a brian/nigel fic as well as a quentin/eliot fic - which will make sense if you've watched the magicians, i promise - and it's heavily peppered with pride and prejudice references. there's humour, there's intense romance, there's a lot of bittersweet moments, and there is some very clever plotting. it's engrossing; this is another fic i read in one sitting as it slowly took over my life. i also think you should read everything else this author has written, by the by.

Blackbird by [archiveofourown.org profile] sixpences - Yuri!!! on Ice, Yuuri/Viktor - M - 103k

what is there to say about blackbird that isn't just incoherent sobbing? this is a very, very good fic. the premise is that yuuri and viktor meet as spies during the second world war, and the fic chronicles their growing relationship over several years. hard politics is never overlooked, and every action has real consequences. you can tell that the fic is impeccably researched, and all of these details that shine through really help to ground the story in place and time. i read this as it was coming out, but it's equally satisfying to read it as a finished product, to notice all the foreshadowing. you don't need to have watched yoi to enjoy this. if you read one fic off this list, make it this one.

[ao3-locked] ode to apollo 13 by [archiveofourown.org profile] beautify - Yuri!!! on Ice, Yuuri/Viktor - E - 67k

this is another AU take on yuri on ice, this time in the form of a space opera. the chief reason this story has stayed with me is because it's an incredible feat of worldbuilding and descriptive writing. from the interiors of spaceships to the wild outdoors of different planets, from the medicine to the engineering, this is a fic with a lot of thought behind it. and as a bonus, it's also an exes AU: the flashbacks to viktor and yuuri's relationship on earth, before they both took to the stars, are some of the most vivid and poignant scenes you'll find in any fic. it's a feat of spectacle, and i guarantee you'll be swept away.

Seven Simple Machines by [archiveofourown.org profile] fluorescentgrey - Harry Potter, Sirius/Remus - M - 59k

if you've ever talked to me about fics i like, you'll probably have already been subjected to my rec for seven simple machines. this is an extraordinary work of fiction, a collection of seven sirius/remus AUs that tie together in the most incredible climax. each AU is self-contained, masterfully crafted, and contains a wealth of detail, from the historic settings to the speculative. the writing is uniquely brilliant. as i mentioned, i love fics with a sense of place, and this has a sense of so many different places, each one delivered for you to get lost in anew. it's a fic that feels like a movie. it's an artwork. read it.

self recs

i feel a little silly putting these fics alongside the masterpieces above, but i also need to learn to stop engaging in casual self-deprecation and value my writing more. also i write a LOT of fics. so here we go. i'm going to spread this across the same fandoms as above.

my number #1 self rec is always do something pretty (while you can). i just love it so much. the premise is simple and ridiculous: a yuri!!! on ice 00s high school au, heavily based on the movie clueless. i researched like mad, wrote in american english for verisimilitude (i am australian, so this was wild), and went through a rigorous editing process to make this as tight and cinematic as possible. i'm incredibly proud of the finished product, though it's not one of my more popular fics. if you read this for one reason, read it for viktor's short-lived emo phase.

these days i'm most active in the harry potter fandom, so i have quite a few self recs here. in general, my hp fic that i'm most proud of is The Accidental Renaissance of Zacharias Smith. if you don't remember who zacharias is, or you do and you hate him - he's the guy in my icon, and he's the worst, but don't worry, if you read this fic you'll love him as much as i do. this fic is kind of my magnum opus, my testament to my love of minor characters. i've written a lot of fics about zacharias and the other much under-loved hufflepuffs and ravenclaws of harry's grade (actually, zach's grade is not canon, but by the power of deductive reasoning which i really should post here on DW, it's most likely that he is in harry's grade.) if you're interested in reading more about these characters, i invite you to start with and whose army? (canon divergence AU where the war goes on well past 7th year), and then nothing much to shout about (canon compliant second war teenage britpop shenanigans).

if you're here for the wolfstar, i've got a few of those two. my favourites are Shadowplay (a first war canon divergence AU based on the man from uncle) and the time when you were mine (a modern AU with texting and silliness but also Emotions). if you don't like ships, read Learning to Fly, which is a hufflepuff draco AU that i will be continuing one day... and i mean it will have shipping but it's predominantly gen, especially for now, since they're still kids.

finally, the magicians: my friend and i have started posting a massive three-part canon rewrite, the first of which is A Spell to Bind All Magicians. look, it's only got chapter one up for now, but it's going to be good. it's going to be great. i also have a couple other solo magicians fics but i've rec'd a lot already so i will leave it there. thanks for reading!

ah, see, i'm actually using the banner this time! for part 3 of the sunshine challenge, i'll be reccing 3 of my favourite books, and maybe you, reader, will join me in hell ;-)

the secret history - donna tartt

quick pitch: horrible people treat each other terribly and commit heinous crimes in the name of the #aesthetic

i read this book for the first time last december and it's already shot up to being one of my favourite books, ever, full stop. maybe this is because it's expressly catered to my tastes: it's about a group of pretentious classics students at a liberal arts college in the late 70s/early 80s - the exact date is unclear, but one of the main characters didn't know the moon landing happened despite having been easily old enough to have watched it on tv. the back cover of the secret history will assure you that this is a serious story, and it is, but it's also a ridiculous dark comedy about a group of utterly dysfunctional 20 year olds struggling with normal things like depression and identity and isolation, and also a murder or two. you know. college life. there are laugh-out-loud moments, contemplative sequences, beautiful descriptive writing, and some really horrifying scenes. it's the kind of book that consumes you.

on the fandom side of things, i'd say the ao3 tag is on the active side, for a microfandom. the secret history also sees a fair bit of traffic in multifandom fests, such as yuletide. there's a bit of scope for shipping, though i would not say that's the main takeaway i got from the book. all of the characters have fascinating relationships with each other, but like, fascinating in the fucked up and often toxic sense of the word. the tumblr fandom is mostly cross-pollination from this thing the kids are calling "dark academia," which is a cool genre in theory (think dead poet's society, too) but it seems to basically boil down to a lot of people who wish the secret history had been set at oxford. if you want oxford, read brideshead revisited, which is not dark academia but is incidentally my next rec.

brideshead revisited - evelyn waugh

quick pitch: man with depression who's never heard of depression falls in love and projects onto a tragic family of rich catholics

i know what you're thinking: ren, do you only read books about sad uni students? well, i am a sad uni student, and i do whatever the hell i want, thank you. but i promise you this has some variety. brideshead revisited is a curious book: it's a satire about rich english families and catholicism, but the driving point is the protagonist charles ryder's relationship with his oxford friend sebastian flyte, which is thick with homoerotic subtext that's lightly acknowledged throughout. their relationship is explored from their early days at oxford through to adulthood and all sorts of tribulations, and in general stands for charles' broader infatuation with the flyte family and their lifestyle. (if you're only in it for the oxford part and the relationship, i will warn you that it keeps going well past that, and it gets morbid, but do press on.) the novel was published in 1945 and by and large set in the 30s and 40s. but there are more recent adaptations: allow me to direct you to the 1981 miniseries and the 2008 movie. the movie in particular does well with making it explicitly gay, and i am biased towards the movie because it stars two of my favourite actors, matthew goode and ben whishaw. or are they my favourites because i saw this movie at a formative age? lol.

there's a small fandom for brideshead revisited, and unsurprisingly most of it is focused on charles/sebastian and exploring AUs. for a lighthearted fandom experience, i suggest following brideshead-suggestions on tumblr. if you're into the magicians, you may be easily persuaded over to this fandom: the first half of the first book is essentially the first part of brideshead revisited, no joke. lev grossman literally modelled quentin and eliot (eliot waugh, it's not even subtle) on charles and sebastian respectively, and it is also essential knowledge that he's written about how he views the book as one of the great romance novels. (so why wasn't queliot canon, lev???) anyway, if you're a show watcher who feels let down, you know where to go...

jonathan strange and mr norrell - susanna clarke

quick pitch: two equally annoying but oppositely polarised magical academics accidentally get the whole country swept up in their flame war

okay, maybe this is a "dark academia" reclist, since all of these books have an academic aspect and all of them are kind of grim. well, i've been well and truly been rumbled. anyway - i feel like a bit of a fraud for reccing this one, because while there's a fairly medium-sized fandom, i'm not active in it, just a lurker. there are lots of great fic writers and fanartists out there: in fact, the blog jsamnfanart runs regular exchanges which always net beautiful works. despite my lack of involvement, i need to rec this book anyway, because everyone needs to read it. it's long, and dense, written in authentic regency english despite being published in 2003, and it's an absolute masterwork. i don't want to describe too much, because this a story that's best consumed as something that unfurls for you. the titular characters are magicians, an iconoclast and a traditionalist, and the way they're played off against one another and the people around them is brilliant and compelling. (despite the fact that i call them annoying, they're really both quite endearing at times, especially jonathan strange.) the story examines relationships, society, and ideas themselves - it's a truly academic book. (there are footnotes.) i really just can't express enough how exceptional the writing is. i don't think there's anything else like it.

it bears mentioning that there is also a really excellent bbc miniseries based on the books, which came out a few years ago. the acting is out of this world, really - eddie marsan in particular is revelatory as gilbert norrell - and the production value is very high. there are a few differences from the book but nothing major. (i'm just salty about one of my favourite bits of poetic justice ever written not making it to the screen, lmao.) i would definitely recommend watching it too.

if you've come here from the sunshine challenge and you're a fan of any of these, please say hi! if you see this list and think "whoa, i bet ren would also like [this other canon]," let me know!!
